Many people are having an issue when launching the multiplayer portion of Call of Duty 4.
Tips:
Reinstall the game
Update your Drivers
There are some issues running CoD 4 Multiplayer on some onboard sound cards. Users with RealTek(TM) onboard sound cards and Windows(R) Vista will need to use Microsoft Audio Drivers 6.0, which can be found at Microsoft Corporation and/or COD4 Windows Vista Audio Drivers Fix. Users with Sigmatel® onboard sound cards need to install all Windows® Vista updates, and the latest Sigmatel drivers from Dell.com.
If you are running the game from a secondary partition, download the latest BIOS updates from your motherboard manufacturer in addition to following the above instructions.
A fix will be posted here once Activision/Infinity Ward releases more info on this error
I've tried just about everything and nothing has worked.
I started with a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R, E4500, Crucial 2gb RAM, XFX 8800GT 256mb, Audigy 2, Raid0 hd on Vista w/SP1. Onboard sound was disabled thru bios when using Audigy 2.
I had the latest drivers for everything, including the bios. If iw3mp.exe didn't crash, I BSOD'd. It never lasts more than 30 mins in game before a crash, usually within 10 mins.
It seems like it started with patch 1.6 and/or SP1 for Vista. Before, it worked fine.
Here's the things I've tried:
Mic plugged in all the time, using TS. (before and after)
Reinstalled the game after complete uninstall (removed entries in regedit)
New, latest video drivers.
New, latest sound drivers (both manuf's and Windows')
Tried every different setting in sound for Audigy 2.
Uninstalled Audigy 2 and removed card, enabled onboard sound.
Microsoft Audio Drivers 6.0
Realtek drivers (r196)
Stereo Mix for onboard (Realtek Azalia)
Disable front jacks (Realtek Azalia)
Copied profile to another profile
New profile from scratch
lower resolution in game
Another fresh install of COD4
Renamed mssmp3.asi to mssmp3.bak (multiple times before and after changes)
Basically everything I could find online, I've tried and nothing seemed to work. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Mine was working fine till i patched to 1.7 than it started giving me the iw3mp.exe error.
Ive read all 9 Pages and i think this should fix the problem.
And to the guy who needs the mssmp3.asi file i can send it to you.
My Specs: (Laptop)
Toshiba X205
1.8 Dual Core
2GB Ram
8700m GT
Realtek HD Audio
First enable the Stereo MIX device (Shown in the previous pages)
Rename the mssmp3.asi file to mssmp3.bak
Start COD4, and Create a New Account - Do not change any settings, and see if this works. If this works , than your old account should work as well.
I downloaded the patch 1.6.
i then installed it.
so i tried to go on multiplayer, but it says that iw3mp.exe is missing!!
it also says that iwm3sp is missing!!!~what do i do?
the patch has just created a ton of problems. and now i can't even play multiplayer. i need help!
ok... i did what the first post said about the realtek drivers and multiplayer now works but i dont have sound....i have sound everywhere else except multiplayer. plz help
