Many people are having an issue when launching the multiplayer portion of Call of Duty 4.
Tips:
Reinstall the game
Update your Drivers
There are some issues running CoD 4 Multiplayer on some onboard sound cards. Users with RealTek(TM) onboard sound cards and Windows(R) Vista will need to use Microsoft Audio Drivers 6.0, which can be found at Microsoft Corporation and/or COD4 Windows Vista Audio Drivers Fix. Users with Sigmatel® onboard sound cards need to install all Windows® Vista updates, and the latest Sigmatel drivers from Dell.com.
If you are running the game from a secondary partition, download the latest BIOS updates from your motherboard manufacturer in addition to following the above instructions.
A fix will be posted here once Activision/Infinity Ward releases more info on this error
i got the error first, so changed the file to .bak, then instead of the error it just crashed, so i changed it back and it still just crashes but no error
and im using xp pro

Fanbloodytastic...Finally got rid of that pesky problem that kept causing me to crassh back to my desktop..all i did was buy a new graphics card, format my PC, update everything possible, changed the msmp3.asi to msmp3.bak, plugged a mike in and away to go...only took me 3 months to work it out..
Was playing Multiplayer for months with no problems (other than playing against all the hacks that plague the servers) ...... until I updated to Vista SP1. Had nothing but problems since. Have tried all fixes listed here (including reinstall), but nothing works. Getting the iw3mp.exe Error + video drivers resetting the card. Was getting system freezes and blue screen, removing and reinstalling drivers seems to have at least fixed this.
Have I found a new SP1 bug.......
Running an Asus P5kE, Q6600, 4Gb Ram, Vista32 Home Premium, Gigabyte 8800GTS.
Heres a solution I have not heard before but just figured out right now. I was getting the iw3mp.exe error in one profile but not the other. Which was crappy cause I was lvl42 in the one that didnt work and the other profile was totally new. All i did was: I went to program files > activision > COD4MW > players > profiles. I took the mpdata out of my profile that kept giving me the error, and copied it into the new profile, and voila! I have all my level and all my upgrades back and it works totally fine. The only difference is that the profile has a different name. If you only have one profile, just try creating a new one and see if you can join MP games. If so, just try my above solution. Hope this helps some!
You Sir, are a legend! Nothing was working, reinstalling or new drivers or plugging in Mics but this did Thanks so much
I'm glad I could help, I was having all the same frustrations till I figured that one out! I'm not sure if many people are trying it or not because most people post something along the lines of "I have tried updating, reformatting, renaming, reinstalling..." etc. But I don't think I have seen a post that says switching the files over using my method does not work, so If none of the other solutions work... try mine everybody!
My geforce 8800GTS 640 MB is fully up to date, vista fully up to date, everything fully up to date (I assume my sound is fully up to date as well)
This looks to be a very common problem.
(edit)
I fixed it, it was my sound...since I'm not a computer tech I assumed my sound updated and the bios (whatever that is? On the intel motherboard) automatically updated too. Well, they were very out of date and I updated them to the latest and now the game works great.
Thanks MnMs. I actually did that last night before I sent out the request for help.
I downloaded DirectX9c from the Microsoft website, tried to install but it said that I was current. (2.2ghz machine)
So then I loaded COD4 on another computer that I have (slowest, worst vid card) and WTF it loaded and *RAN* (at a low resolution). (2ghz machine)
So this morning I decided I would switch out the AGP cards in the two computers. X1650Pro <==> X1050. I got that straight and started COD on the 2ghz and guess what came up? iw3mp.exe error. S.O.B.
I renamed the mssmp3.asi to .bak in the [Miles] folder and it works like a champ.
Now I think it might have something to do with the Nvidia Audio drivers on the 2.2ghz machine (Emachines t3256). The machine played COD2 just fine.
DirectX has now got me screwed up.
how do u rename the file to .bak? it keeps telling me that its a read-only file and any file on thie CD-ROM cant be changed
