Many people are having an issue when launching the multiplayer portion of Call of Duty 4.

Tips:
Reinstall the game
Update your Drivers

There are some issues running CoD 4 Multiplayer on some onboard sound cards. Users with RealTek(TM) onboard sound cards and Windows(R) Vista will need to use Microsoft Audio Drivers 6.0, which can be found at Microsoft Corporation and/or COD4 Windows Vista Audio Drivers Fix. Users with Sigmatel® onboard sound cards need to install all Windows® Vista updates, and the latest Sigmatel drivers from Dell.com.

If you are running the game from a secondary partition, download the latest BIOS updates from your motherboard manufacturer in addition to following the above instructions.

A fix will be posted here once Activision/Infinity Ward releases more info on this error

Hey guys,
New here. Gotta problem. I was getting the iw3mp.exe error, so as recommended on this thread I changed the mssmp3.asi to .bak and what do you know no more iw3mp error.
However now I'm getting a

DirectX encountered an unrecoverable error.

Check the readme for possible solutions.

Has anybody else seen this?

The DirectX readme is located where?! :?

Try downloading the latest version of DirectX (directx 9 if you have windows XP) and upgrading your video card drivers, if possible

Thanks MnMs. I actually did that last night before I sent out the request for help.
I downloaded DirectX9c from the Microsoft website, tried to install but it said that I was current. (2.2ghz machine)

So then I loaded COD4 on another computer that I have (slowest, worst vid card) and WTF it loaded and *RAN* (at a low resolution). (2ghz machine)

So this morning I decided I would switch out the AGP cards in the two computers. X1650Pro <==> X1050. I got that straight and started COD on the 2ghz and guess what came up? iw3mp.exe error. S.O.B.

I renamed the mssmp3.asi to .bak in the [Miles] folder and it works like a champ.

Now I think it might have something to do with the Nvidia Audio drivers on the 2.2ghz machine (Emachines t3256). The machine played COD2 just fine.

DirectX has now got me screwed up.

So my question is how can i fix this without having to plug in my headphones in my mic plug, i need to talk somehow. This is the first time ive had the problem since ive had cod4, and i bought cod4 the very first day it came out.

I don't get what your problem is? If it needs to be plugged in for COD4 that means you already have the ability to talk on vent since its plugged in

Switch to what? Don't your headphones have a microphone? Sorry if I don't know what you mean

Alright let me explain again, in order for me to play cod4, i need to plug in regular headphones in my microphone plug, but with that being in there i cant plug my mic in my mic plug, so i cant talk on vent. does that make a little more sense? i dont know how to fix this

Well it should work if you plug in the Microphone in to the Microphone plug.. don't think it has to be the headphone into the microphone plug. But I'm guessing you've already tried plugging them into the right plugs. (that's what you meant by switching it I guess) Really weird since I don't think the computer can tell the difference between what is plugged in, only if something is plugged in. (I might be wrong though)

Have you tried the other things mentioned in this thread?
