Many people are having an issue when launching the multiplayer portion of Call of Duty 4.

Tips:
Reinstall the game
Update your Drivers

There are some issues running CoD 4 Multiplayer on some onboard sound cards. Users with RealTek(TM) onboard sound cards and Windows(R) Vista will need to use Microsoft Audio Drivers 6.0, which can be found at Microsoft Corporation and/or COD4 Windows Vista Audio Drivers Fix. Users with Sigmatel® onboard sound cards need to install all Windows® Vista updates, and the latest Sigmatel drivers from Dell.com.

If you are running the game from a secondary partition, download the latest BIOS updates from your motherboard manufacturer in addition to following the above instructions.

A fix will be posted here once Activision/Infinity Ward releases more info on this error

this posted on another forum by a guy named "The street" And i thank him very much..... it works for me in the single player game, but cannot connect in the multi player..anyway here is a copy paste from his thoughtful post....>hello erverybody,
so...many people has the "iw3mp.exe" error.me too,but i've defeated! i know what i say would be impossible but it's the thruth.
Put a plug (headset,microphone...) in the microphone-output!
i'm not joking! and if you don't belive it...test it,what can you lose?

other solutions...(don't work by me)

1.the file "mssmp3.asi" rename to "mssmp3.bak"
2.(frome Activision)
There are some issues running CoD 4 multiplayer on some onboard sound cards. If you have a RealTek(TM) onboard sound card and Windows(R) Vista you should try removing your sound card drivers and allow Windows Vista to install it’s default sound drivers. Please make note of the make and model of your sound card prior to removing it in order to aid in reinstallation at a later date.

To remove your sound card drivers do the following:

* Open the control panel link from the start menu
* Check the programs and features tool to see if your sound card drivers are listed here
* If they are not open the system tool in the control panel
* Click on the device manager task on the left
* Locate your sound card in the list, it should be in the sound, video, and game controllers section
* Right-click on the sound card name and select Uninstall.

If you have a Sigmatel® onboard sound card you will need to install all Windows® Vista updates, and the latest Sigmatel drivers from www.dell.com. Please navigate from the dell homepage to support, your make and model computer, and look for a sound card update.

If you are running the game from a secondary partition, download the latest BIOS updates from your motherboard manufacturer in addition to following the above instructions.

3. Right-Click on the desctop link frome mp
go to compatibility and click on
Programm with Windows XP (service Pack 2) use
and, Programm using as a Administrator.

so,i hope i could helped you
peace...The Street

No,renaming the mssmp3.asi file to .bak got me into the game, once in the games console single player worked fine...When i tryed the multi i was unable to connect, getting a timeout error, not sure if the udate did somthing to reconfig my connection or it was something else ,but it worked for hours before getting an error when i shut it down,i started it again after error and it was fine....i would say it works at least for me and i tried everything as you read already.....

I was fine until one of two things happened. I download 1.5 and before ending my session I found myself in a server with moded maps. Since then I keep getting the error. Tried all the fixes, none work, new profiles (full re-install) are un-effected by the error so there must be something in my original saved profile thats ****ing things up. Question is what!

try uninstalling the game then use reglean or whatever reg cleaning tool you use,try delete all existing cod 4 folders remaining after uninstall, reboot.remove then reinstall sound card and video drivers, then reinstall the game,on reinstall maybe try installing it custom and choose a new directory...good luck,oh and dont forget all the extra bs you have to do with stereo mixing,mics,etc,etc...and maybe the renaming a file listed above....sounds kind of stupid i never seen a game released that so many people could not run....wtf
