Many people are having an issue when launching the multiplayer portion of Call of Duty 4.
Tips:
Reinstall the game
Update your Drivers
There are some issues running CoD 4 Multiplayer on some onboard sound cards. Users with RealTek(TM) onboard sound cards and Windows(R) Vista will need to use Microsoft Audio Drivers 6.0, which can be found at Microsoft Corporation and/or COD4 Windows Vista Audio Drivers Fix. Users with Sigmatel® onboard sound cards need to install all Windows® Vista updates, and the latest Sigmatel drivers from Dell.com.
If you are running the game from a secondary partition, download the latest BIOS updates from your motherboard manufacturer in addition to following the above instructions.
A fix will be posted here once Activision/Infinity Ward releases more info on this error
Ihave the Dell Xps with Soundblaster audiigy And Dell cant even fix the promblem I updated all my drivers from Dell and I'm still gettining the same error Does anyone know how to fix this error I think Call of Duty needs to make a patch for this.
then download Vista Driver (32/64 bits) Driver only (ZIP file) and open the file ater the download and run the setup program, restart after its done and u should be good... lemme know how it goes..
So I'm getting this error now, the iw3mp.exe is not working, error, but here's the thing, I can get into a multiplayer game, and play for like a minute or so, roughly, and then it crashes giving me that error. I think it has to do with the audio drivers as people have mentioned is the solution, but from what I've tried, nothing has worked, and that included updating to the latest versions of my sound drivers, which I'm still using the same sound card as I've used in the past, and I didn't use a microphone then, when it worked, as I'm also not using one now, either. I do remember however trying to get a microphone to work with my sound card, but really couldn't all that well, so I don't know what the problem is now, and I'm like I said, I'm still using the same sound card as I did when the game was working. I read somewhere that one solution was to update the Sigmatel drivers, seeing how I'm using a Dell right now, that could be one of the solutions, because I couldn't see that device in my Sound devices, and I remember accidentally unistalling some device a few weeks ago, some time after my last play time with the game, but I don't remember what. Hopefully reinstalling the Sigmatel drivers fix it, because this is making me mad, at least you guys aren't getting into the game at all, that's not as bad as getting in it then the game crashing after a minute or so, it's like the game is teasing me or something.
For some people plugging a microphone/headphones into the sockets works.
Sorry if this has already been posted, I'm not reading through every single post to find out.
hey everyone i am useing windows xp and i am also having this problem please help me i have tried mic, drivers and .bak and guese what .... still not working please help...
This really worked for me. Difference is that I had disabled my microphone so I enabled and Call Of Duty started working fine. Makes no sense at all, but whatever.

WOW THIS WORKED FOR ME!!!! Thanks man for your help. I dont know who told you about that. Thanks again!!
Heres a solution I have not heard before but just figured out right now. I was getting the iw3mp.exe error in one profile but not the other. Which was crappy cause I was lvl42 in the one that didnt work and the other profile was totally new. All i did was: I went to program files > activision > COD4MW > players > profiles. I took the mpdata out of my profile that kept giving me the error, and copied it into the new profile, and voila! I have all my level and all my upgrades back and it works totally fine. The only difference is that the profile has a different name. If you only have one profile, just try creating a new one and see if you can join MP games. If so, just try my above solution. Hope this helps some!
OMG THANK YOU SOOO MUCH, THIS HAS FINALLY FIXED MY PROBLEM, for anyone who has this iw3mp.exe error for just one profile, PLEASE just try this, it's easy and it has worked for me.
I just bought the game tonight, and after installation, I am getting this damn error.
Here is my actual error message for reference (occurs when I try to load the game): iw3mp.exe - Unable To Locate Component
This application has failed to start because d3dx9_34.dll was not found.
Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
My PC's specs:
Core 2 Duo E8400
4 GB OCZ Platinum DDR2 1000
Asus P5Q PRO mother board
Asus HD4850 512MB
Vista 64-bit Home Premium (DX10)
What I've tried:
*Changing the mssmp3.asi to .bak
*Uninstalling the onboard Realtek HD drivers and letting window's automatically install
*Installing Realtek's latest drivers R2.07
*Installing Asus' latest onboard sound drivers
*plugging headphones into the mic plug
*Enabled "Stereo MIX"
*Can't delete profiles because I haven't even created one since I can't even get into the game
I don't know what to do anymore. From the error message, it's the same one you guys had? Or is mine different somehow?
One thing I did when installing the game is to choose not to install DX9.0c since I am using Vista 64bit Home Premium which comes with DX10.
I don't even know if reinstalling will fix it - probably a waste of time. I've been at this for over 2 hrs and getting really frustrated. I would go return this game if I could, but opened software can't be, so I must keep trying.
Any additional advice much appreciated.
UPDATE: FIXED!
I said, "what the hell" and installed dx9 that came with the dvd. It automatically installed the missing files and now the game works.
