I like to play both equally because I find that switching between the two keeps you sharper overall and you dont get too ingrained in one play style. Some setups work better than others one of the best things about hardcore is the fact that you can not worry about having stopping power, you also dont have to worry so much about crazy grenade chucking chargers, or so much about people that will charge into a hail of bullets and hope for the best. I think i actually saw a post on here that someones tactic I think it was whiteys, said his tactic relied on him ' taking some damage '
There is not way in hell that that would work in hardcore, you would be dead before you hit the ground. Its better in many ways, sniping especially, for hardcore the only sniper rifle you should be using is the m21 for the pure reason that its basically a 1 hit kill on any target always you can take clays, UAV jammer and then sprint or dead silence. You can be totally invisible and take out multiple targets with ease, everyone raves about the m40 in normal for sniping but in hardcore... well what would you prefer say a group of 4 ppl are running across somewhere, with the m40 you could take out 1 maybe 2 if you were lucky, with the m21 you could easily take them all in hardcore, so for sniping hardcore is much more fun.
Stealthing is great too because the reduced damage of the silencer doesnt effect you too much at all, I use the m14 with a silencer for my stealth setup in hardcore, and its still basically a 1 hit kill at nearly any range
Moving carefully and checking your corners is soo much more important in hardcore, you will have no chance of turning in time if someone is hiding you'll just be dead. Running across open ground really is a no go too, you will also be insta dead, you cant run around like a headless chicken basically you really have to use your cover all the time assuming your always being tracked by a sniper or that there could be a dug in guy around any corner,
You may assume that this is obviously the case in normal, and of course that is true, but I will give you an example of the difference,
last night i was playing groundwar on district, i had ran thru the market area and was moving to secure flag A. took out a guy guarding it behind one of the concrete blocks thew a smoke grenade and took the flag. then turned around shotgund a guy, ran back up the road rpd a guy, now, heres where the difference is.
There were about 4-5 guys at the end of the street shooting down on the other end where my teammates were, So I open fire with the rpd, stupidly though i didnt hav that much left in my magazine, so i take down about 2 guys, then they have noticed me, so im like ****, pull out the shotgun take another guy... BUT i am now taking damage so i charge in knife swing around shotgun and then reknife another guy, finally they have respawned and I get shot in the back :|
but the point I am making is that you cant be in the middle of 5 ppl knifing and shotgunning people and taking hits on hardcore, if id taken half the damage i had i wouldnt have got half of those kills each time i survived with a bit of luck and a bit of quick reactions,
on hardcore there just wouldnt be luck id just be dead.
So anyways, thats my main conclusion about hardcore, dont assume to survive, assume that as soon as you move one bullet is going to fly at you from anywhere and kill you, use more stealthy setups, dont use guns that have massive amounts of damage that you dont need like the 50cal sniper or the M60, or that are slow but good damage like the m40sniper
use things like the g36, the m14 silenced, the mp5, and the m21
use fast guns with decent accuracy maybe silenced
