You may have simultaneously answered your question. LOL Just kidding...Its meant as a derogatory term for someone lacking skill or a new player that jus might not get it yet...The people that say it the most seem to be the one's that are getting raped because of they're own lack of skill...somehow, it must make them feel better inside.

Exactly my point even though i kinda explained it wrong
Well, to answer this question we must go back to the origins of the word noob. Before it was used in games, noob in it's original form was actually used at the work place. Regressing all the way back, new is the original term for noob.
"Hey, you must be new here." or "Are you new to the workplace?" From there it simultaneously progressed to (new + colloquial term for person). As in "Hey it's the new guy!" This term was the first form used in games, which would later regress to the term newbie.
Ah yes, newbie. I remember when newbie was first introduced into gaming and as it was already common, became equally so common throughout the gaming community. As most phrases and terms would be shorten, so to would newbie suffer the same fate.
Alas, we come to noob. Indeed short for newbie> new guy> new. Recent studies ( I laughed at this myself. As the idea of me collecting the data is truely a funny image.) show that even noob is being shorten or 'dumbed down' to nub. A new chapter in the noob-timeline or just an outrageous attempt to make noob as short as possible... Well that's for you to decide.
As for the true definition of noob goes:
Noob- A colloquial term used in the gaming community to both insult and denounce the systematic and social standing of a new player.
I know, a webster nominated post, but atleast I had fun writing it!

Noob used to be a descriptive, non-offensive word to describe a new player to a game.
Its now been abused by so many idiots, and been the butt of so many bad jokes that its lost all meaning.
Now N00b just means any other insult "b**tard", "W**ker" or moron. people just use it as a crappy insult, not realising it isnt even very offensive anymore.

95% of COD4 players play Soft-core. If your one of the 5% who need the realism and play HC only, put this in your sig.
Newbie (New player) = someone who just started playing a game (in this context) A player who lacks the skill and ability of a player that has been around. He/She doesn't know what he/she is doing. This is normal, everybody starts out as a newbie in a game. (You still have to learn what you can and cannot do)
Noob = Tho noob may be derived from the word newbie, it has a total different meaning most of the time. Now most people use it as a way of insulting another player. But like said, most people don't find it offending anymore and will pay no attention to it. Noob is commonly used and I'll give some examples when people start calling other people noobs
+ When someone gets raped by the same person over and over, they lack the ability to counter the attackers tactics. They don't know what to do so they resort to NOOB to let the other player know they don't like it.
+ People who camp are often seen as noobs
(This is another discussion, but i feel camping is a strategy as any other one. I don't like it tho. I normally never call people noob but there's an exception, A camping sniper who has two claymores behind his a** Is an idiot, it's clear he doesn't have a clue to what he's doing. He totaly misses the concept of a sniper in this game. Never rely on claymores to cover your back all the time, keep on the move.)
+ The use of certain weapons and perks is seen as noobish
ie. Grenadelauncher, P90, Martyrdom, Juggernaut, random nade tossing, ...
I think this is real BS, the weapons are in the game, use them to your liking.
(DIFERENCE when the server has specific rules.)
+ When you kill someone in a way he/she thinks is impossible, or just for killing someone. These persons are idiots! OMG N00B Yu killed me wtf HaXXOR!!!
Don't pay attention to it, most of the time it's said out of frustration that the game isn't going the way they would like it to go.
I remember hearing "newbie" back in my Everquest days and thinking that was the stupidest "insult" ever. Now I hear "nub" on my private server WoW days and think... I bet you don't even know who the first president was... O.o
Sometimes when people call me a "noob" I just say "how long did it take you to think of that insult?" and then just block/stop listening. xD
