internet speed for online play

b4 i started this topic and i did seach and found a few other topics but it was mainly people posting thier current speed but i wanted to ask what would be a good speed to play online? just because b4 i had roadrunner that gave me about 15 mbps and i only paid $20 a month but i just moved and since that was a promotional offer they cant transfer it to my new place and to get the same speed now they want to charge me about $60. my question is how fast do i really NEED to have a decent connection and does anyone have any recomendations on a provider? the reason that its in the ps3 thread is because i want you guys to keep in mind that i will be using this internet strictly for ps3 cod4 use. thanks alot and any advice would really help

It's not the speed that really matters, it's your ping and where the other players you are playing against are from. But if you are concerned about the speed, it's the upload speed you have to worry about.

I probably have the crappiest connection on this whole site, 50kbps upload. But I still manage to get a 3-green bar connection against New Zealanders and Australians. Against Americans I'll only get a 1-red bar connection. Even if an American with the best connection ever played against me in a cage match and I was the host, he'd get 1-red bar.

Ping is the time it takes to reach the server and 'ping' back. The lower your ping the better. The higher your ping and you'll start experiencing lag. Go to speedtest.net, run a speed-test and it'll tell you your upload/download speed and it'll also tell you your current ping. This changes every game though but gives you a rough idea. A ping over 150ms is considered as quite bad, my ping lingers around 110ms. Which is still bad but bearable. A good ping is around 50ms, an excellent ping is around 15ms.

hmm so i pretty much have to set it up and then test it and hope its good. the good thing is that they give you 30 days free and you can cancel if you dont liek it

Yeah pretty much. Although you could try and ask your ISP if they could give you a rough idea of what the ping will be. They'll most likely choose the closest server and give you an estimate.
