Well my internet connection is awful for playing COD4 online, constantly in the red with a little luck in the yellow. And once in a blue moon 3 bars.
The reason? USB modem. Never ever buy a pay as you go USB modem just because "you don't want to be tied down in a contract". If you want to play online this is a very bad idea due to it's 3.2mbps speed (god only knows what are the specific specs).
I get bashed over the mic in some games now, to take for an example;
- "Andrew gtfo out of the game and take your s****y a** connection with you."
- "That Andrew guy is lagging like hell, leave now."
Culprit was billyb but yeah.
After several talks and arguments with my parents a router and contract is out of the question. What is available though is the new 3 USB modem sticks. They are 7.4mbps, twice the speed. But I still fear a God-awful connection and putting my online gaming dream to the matress.
I ask, is there any way to improve the connection. Any way what so ever? I'm desperate. I'm hooked on CoD4's online mode and is my passion. Being stopped from playing due a poor constant connection is depressing.
If you have any tips or you use one yourself please come forward and help me. This is a last ditch effort until I'm old enough to move out and get a job. And I'm 15, so that's gonna be a long way off.
Regards, Andy.

You REALLY need a router but since you can't get one, try playing against friends from near you. Invite them into the same lobby as you in a public match and it should increase your connection. Is it red every single time you have a game??

Most of the time, but there's a few matches, say, 3 out of 10 matches I get a yellow bar connection. I'll try that speedtest thing and post up the results maybe.
Right, done the connection test. And here are the results;
Good lord! D: That was to London.
That was to Maidenhead.

Yeah definitely do that, speedtest.net.
It sounds like my connection, I always get red/yellow bars with the occasional green when playing against people in my own country/a nearby country. It seems to have got alot better since Double XP weekend for some reason, it matches me with people near me instead of half way around the world. Post up your results from the speed-test and we'll go from there.

Woah...your ping is enormously high. That's what will be doing it. I get around the same upload speed (pathetic aye), and mine goes alright. But my ping is only around 100ms (that's still high as though, a good ping is under 50ms).
Anything over 150ms will start to give you problems, the 313ms ping would be an absolute nightmare. What is the max speed of your broadband plan?

Max speed is 3.2mbps... supposedly. I believe they lie out of their ass based on this xD
I mean that's like halved 3 times (quick guess, late night with a headache, never good for doing maths )
That's pretty good. Do you know what the max upload speed is though? So it must be your modem restricting your speed by that much. There's not really alot you can do with a modem. Perhaps you could ask for a router for Christmas, lol.
One more question, is it a single port modem? If it's a multi-port modem then you should be able to forward the ports. That might work. But if it's only a single port you won't be able to do this.

Looks like a single port but can't tell by the pic. It'd usually say if it is multi-port in the specs. Come to think of it, port-forwarding wouldn't do a modem much good as it has no firewall/routing capabilities.
So really, your only option is to upgrade to a router and be done with all your nightmares.
