Default multiplayer problems

hi all, i am having problems with my muiltiplayer(the pc version)... i already have problems with my pc freezing for sometimes 5 mins when it gets to hot. basicaly for some reason when i used to play cod2 on the pc it would be really laggy on mutiplayer and singleplayer and so i fixed it by turning downs settings and for a while i cuold play on the internet but then it did not work because every time it started up i got a error message. so i left it and i have reacently got cod4 and completed the singleplayer and really enjoyed it(it frooze every now and then, but gameplay was fine and did not lag...) so wanted to play the multiplayer online but i got the same message i got when i tried playing cod2 online so i read some topics on here and found out about plugging a headset in so i did and it fixed that problem and then updated to about 1.5 because i got error messages when i was loading 1.6. nevertheless i started it up and for some reason when it start it's proper laggy so much so that the mouse will move every 5 -10 secs which means it unplayable....

PLEASE HELP!!!, i would be so happy and would br very greatful if someone could come up with a fix or something...

Have you got all the graphics settings on low?

If you were playing a game prior to COD4, reboot the computer then try running COD4.

You're not using dial-up are you?

What are your system specs mate the irratic mouse movement and system freezing could be down to below standard hardware or drivers make sure all drivers for all hardware are up to date.
If your asking a question such as the one above then if you include your system specs someone may spot the problem from that ie; your gfx may not be good enough to play ect
CPU E8400 300mhz
MOBO gigabyte P35_s3g
RAM 6 gig patriot extreme
GFX GTX 280
HDD x3
SOUND USB cyber snipa headset and mic 5.1
DVD drives x2 lightscribe dvd rw
O/S vista home prem x64 bit
MONITOR acer 24" al2416w

I hope this helps

it has started to work now but i have had to turn the settings to medium kinda settings, i have recently just upgraded my processor to a 2 core duo 2.6ghz and a 9600gt 512mb graphics cards and i am still having problems with the game freezing every now and then, i have done my best to keep things cool by taking the case of and letting a destop fan blow air into it... alhtough i do only have 1 gb of ram(2* 512) could this be a problem?
