Default Thoughts on Broadband and dial up gaming

I have played Call Of Duty 4 on PS3 on dial up connection and it works perfectly fine.

I am thinking about getting Call Of Duty 4 on PC. I have a internet plan that when my data usage runs out, my internet is slowed down to dial up.
I am wondering, when my internet slows down from broadband to dial up, how well will I stay connected to the servers? And will I experience mass amounts of lag?

I think that I won't get much lag because of experience playing Call Of Duty 4 online on PS3. It does not lag at all on that platform.

Somebody please prove my theory wrong

Which internet provider are you with and what plan are you on man?

I've never tried COD4 on dial-up, my guess is that it'd be laggy as hell. It's laggy enough on broadband, unless I'm playing people from AUS/NZ.

Oh ok, do you know what your max download/upload speeds are? I'm with Xnet (broadband of course).

Here's a thread from a separate site regarding COD4 on dial-up:

You do know that COD4 online is free aye? It's free for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 (although Xbox users have to pay to use Xbox Live).

It doesn't affect your broadband usage at all. Same goes for all PS3 demo downloads etc.

It's mainly your upload speed you have to worry about for COD4 online.

It comes under the 'Local' category for internet usage, meaning that it's free. There are dedicated servers in and around your town which provide free access. You might rack up a few mb's a month but it's un-noticable on the bill. The PC users also get the Variety Map Pack for free, a saving of $18.90 NZD.

Oh nice. Cheers for that. Do I have to manually download them when I get my new rig and game?

Because I want my game and PC to be as pure and clean as possible. Eg: I don't want to be downloading and adding crap to my game and PC.

Also how do I find and connect to the "dedicated servers in and around your town which provide free access"?
Also what do you mean by 'free access'?

Sorry about this Silent, I'm such a noob!

Unfortunately you have to download it, won't take up hardly any space though.

Here's the link for when you get the game:

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare by Activision

It should automatically connect when you go to Multiplayer Online mode. You connect to the Host of the game (the person with the best connection).

Here's my Xnet Usage monitor. The Local section represents my PS3 online usage, I don't get charged for any of it.

National is for New Zealand sites like TradeMe etc.
