Default COD4 multiplayer freezes & sound loops

Hello,
I bought call of duty 4 some time ago. But everytime when i play the multiplayer, the game freezes, resulting in a black screen (no signal to the screen) and the sound loops.
My system specs are:
Intel core 2 Quad Q6700 @ 2.66 Ghz
RAM 4,00 GB
2x Geforce 8800 GT (in SLI)
Realtek onboard audio
OS: Vista 64bit

I don't overclock or anything like that. My cpu temperatures always seem to be fine (dont have a lot of other problems with other games like crysis, bioshock, assassins creed,...)
I've already tried several things to solve this problem:
- Reinstalled the game, including the patches 1.6 and 1.7
- Installed the latest Geforce drivers (now at 177.79 (beta-version)
- Reinstalled the latest realtek audio drivers (2.01)
- In the control panel, then Sounds, then in the recording tab, right mouse button and then "display disabled devices", then enabled the "stereo-mix"
- also in the control panel, then Sounds, then the Recording tab, then for all the devices in that window, properties, tab "advanced", i turned the "exclusive mode privilege" off.
- plugged in a microphone (as well in the back as in the front of my pc)
- checked that the refresh rate is the same as the one that my screen supports (60 Hz)
- right mouse button on the shortcut of the .exe file, and then compatibility -> execute as windows xp service pack 2
- in the shortcut-command, added +seta r_mode "1680x1050" +seta r_displayRefresh "60 Hz"
- changed the display to 800*600 and colordept 32bit

But still the game keeps crashing ... can someone help me please? Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome to our forums!

That could be your problem.
Take a look at the News announcement about this. It suggests to use the Microsoft Audio Drivers 6.0.
I don't have Vista myself, but people seem to have a lot of problems with the Realtek sound drivers on Vista.

thanks for replying and welcoming me :-)
well, the problem still isnt solved
extra things i've tried since then:
- "double-click on that orange loud speaker symbol in the task bar, then click on the folder icon in the upper right edge and activate "Disable front panel jack detection"
- removed the realtek 2.01 driver and played with the "default" driver from windows vista
- installed the realtek 2.02 driver (= latest driver)
the thing is, when i look for the microsoft drivers 6.0 on that link you gave me, there isnt any audio driver to be found. When i google it, most of the hits refer to the realtek driver
So the problem remains :-(

update: it seems to be working now; other things that i tried:
- i uninstalled Asus GamerOSD, Asus doctor & Nvidia monitor (although they werent active when i played COD4, i just wanted to make sure that they werent running "somewhere")
- i deactivated the microphone: control panel -> sound -> recording tab -> microphone -> disable
- i uninstalled the current video driver ( 177.79 beta version) and reinstalled the "official" latest one (175.19)
- i reinstalled directX 9.0c (because for some reason i got the new error concerning directX when trying to start the game)
No more problems since then; just had 1 short glitch of sound at one point while playing (i already tought it was crashing because this event always triggers it) but it just continued without incidents

I had this problem a few times. Every other day it would do this, then it just stopped.

extra things i've tried since then:
- tried to change the SLI-settings somehow: first turned them on as well in the nvidia control channel as in the COD4 options panel
then tried to turn it off in COD4 options, but still on in nvidia
then tried to turn it off in nvidia, but on in COD4 options
and last but not least turned it off in nvidia, and off in COD4 options.
Still keeps crashing ...
