One was using an MP5 and the other an AK47. On every map they abslolutely kicked the **** out of me and everyone else. EVERY MAP! They would finish with 25 kills and maybe 2 or 3 deaths. I couldn't believe it.
After 12 days of playing time I can't come close and can't even seem to find my niche.
I was cursing up a storm as I was pissed off as hell. I'd finish with like 3 or 4 kills and over a dozen deaths against these mother****ers.
Usually I otherwise finish with more kills than deaths.

Being a one man think tank im going to help you, take my answers or leave them cause this is the truth of so called skill;
-Play alot, literally make a lifestyle of being a WAW-nerd and play play play untill you know every nook, cranny, flowerpot and scratch of dirt on the levels. This way you wont have to ever waste time thinking what way to look or get yourself walking into anothers sights back turned. You will know every camp spot, hotspot and even random spots anyone can be, and you will prevent anyone else to see you knowing where people could be, the most important thing of this game is not how good you can press the R1 button but how intelligent you can manouver to put other players in a weak spot.
-Sit on top of the server/have the best internet connection in the world.
Unlike the bull on actual skill people propagate to be some people being worthless and some being good at the game; everyone has the potential, even your granny. But not everyone has the speed to react in a firefight due to lag.
I myself have this problem so i know best when it comes to lag how it can affect your game, if you want to be great instead of average then you better have a better connection than the majority, it will not only keep you from always losing firefights you normally could have won, it will give you an edge over most people therefore netting you free kills in most encounters.
-Narrow down your playstyle to a single fail proof build of 'play to win'
That means first of all; never let anyone play on your system like for instance i let my younger brother get my stats to hell (he likes to rush trough open fields, he plays for fun.)
Hey, you want to be a great player, you dont want to play for fun so get with it. You will get less enjoyment out of what you are doing but at least you can wave your arms into the air being popular with your awesome k/d ratio. (to yourself cause when you play to win you wont make friends) Yea sorry, but im being honest here and there is no place for emo taps on the shoulder.)
Dont forget to get used to the highest aim speed setting, mid air turning around can sometimes safe your life and it also makes you look like spiderman.
The key to play to win is to stick with the best equipment and perks, no matter how much of an a-hole people will hold you to be you should focus on getting the most broken and hated of both; Type 100 for a weapon, this weapon shoots 50 bullets per second and only needs a single one to hit wich even a 2 day old newbie could do by strafing while holding the trigger. Someone who knows the game can sit in the tower of the castle map and accurately kill even a cat with that sits in hitlers window in berlin with this gun so wield it. For perks take juggernaut, you dont need more damage in a game that practically insta kills you with every gun, and this is not a matter of guns but of how many bullets you can fling at people (wich is why you need the type100 in the first place) and dont take martyrdom, i know its the most used perk but if you want to have a high k/d rating you dont want to get kills only when you die but rather get them while you stay alive.
Instead take the perk deep impact cause you dont want to waste time waiting for people getting around a corner when you see them crawl behind a window.
No matter how silly it sounds as 3rd perk take the satchel charges, you will sometimes get on maps with tanks and no matter how much of a captain planet you are a tank will kill you unless you ninja the fu- around and double satchel the stupid thing into the air. Ive been taking down at least 50 tanks in the time ive played (I only played waw a single week and only 2 hours a day or so.. Most of the time whilst knifing walking players left and right, i have a ninja playstyle, camo etc and like to stay out of sight at all times, so while i tactically place my charges people often take prone right next to me asking me to be sliced and im a nice guy so i never say no to that, heh now i think of it one of my games i knifed 4 people while taking a tank down and im not a pro at waw at all. Its all in the mind knowing how to move to ruin the other players perspective of where you are, but that ofcourse isnt important in this game, all you need is an edge so lets get back to playing to win)
Aside from blowing up tanks these satchels come in handy when you are overwhelmed by 4 or 5 other players teaming up against your location, simply lure them into your single satchel and boom monsterkill, believe me most players are really stupid when it comes to seeing a enemy soldier, they either throw a grenade or walk right at you, what i do in such is first think of what the best location to throw a satchel is to avoid having it blow up by a grenade, then manouvering to a location where they have no way of having a clean shot but me remaining full sight on the range they would come from.
Remember those things, dont just run at people or camp in obvious or blast range locations cause that is what gets you killed. Trick people in coming after you so you gain back the advantage, you see them; they scout; they lose.
Finally; dont get frag grenades, its not worth it at all. Learn how to use the gas grenades, it lasts longer.. can be used against more opponents.
Personally i play with the smoke grenade to block enemies sight so i can reposition myself when i miss a shot due to lag but it though it keeps me alive it wastes time and you need something both defensive and offensive to keep the momentum, sarin gas it the way to go.
So all in all; playing to win and using above common sense/logic to manouvre yourself in a better position than the enemy at all times is what will improve your k/d rating without doubt.
Ofcourse you risk losing enjoyment and getting fat irl but if you think its worth it to get 'pro' then by all means do so.
I do hope that you gain enjoyment and stay handsome so you can thank me instead of feeling sorry.
Greets; maistr.

I now have improved to a .86 K/D ratio (I know I need to update sig). What helped me the most was learning the maps. What also helped was being more aggressive. I know some people say let them come to you, but that didn't work for me.

Funny you should say that, in fact it 'would' work for you. Its why you have a .86 k/d ratio now and i with my lag and little brother ruining my k/d have a .94 ratio .
If i had played alone i wouldve had around 1.30 without a doubt still not taking away the lag. And aside from me not caring two bricks about k/d in the first place.
Looking for people gets you killed, knowing where people are gets you a mission, direct approach gets you a kill and a death. Outmanouvering them strategically gets you a kill and a new mission. I consider myself to be average but i have a way of logical thinking and what i cannot understand is how people get it into their heads to sometimes randomly run around, randomly give up their cover, randomly enter certain places. Even when playing for fun it is important to keep your opponent in a weak spot, and when they see you and you dont see them it is you who is in the weak spot, you might evade the first burst of fire. But they still know where you are and you are going to have to scout for them. If people would not just run around without a clue merely to spot other people they would not be seen as much themselves instead i see people shooting at others wide in the open and then getting killed from fire from 5 directions. To play more effectively try to think like this is a real war; how do you survive a war and defeat the other side? By not becoming a target yourself, let the enemy become one.
