Default Keyboard Control Layout

Hi!
Damn!! PC gaming is SOo godly compared to console gaming!!
=___= i cant believe my friends who say "nooOO console is wayy more legit!"
~pff **** that!

anyways... sadly my laptop is too weaksauce so i play COD4 on xbox360..
HOWEVER!! i do it with a mouse and keyboard [FTW]!!

can someone please provide me with their keyboard control layout for this game?
the mouse and keyboard made my game improve HELLAA.. but i think my keyboard layout could be better... some things feel kindof uncomfortable and i just dont know where to put them.

so i want to compare the setup i made with the controls that PC gamers are using

thanks!

My setup's almost identical to snipers, however I have some differences from the default setup:

Knife = mouse button 4 (thumb button)
Special grenades = scroll down on the mousewheel
Special weapons = 3
Air support = 4

I find this setup is a little quicker to use than default...

There are a number of known issues with using a keyboard and mouse for the 360. I have both and yes I prefer the PC both for graphics and because I get to use the keyboard and mouse. When I play my 360 I suck it up and use the godforsaken controller. My only big gripe with the controller is the right thumb stick has very poor acceleration and precision aiming in some games is almost impossible for me. Because of that I don't snipe in COD 4 on the 360 or in Gears on the 360.

Anywho back to the adapter. I'll try to be brief since the details are not the issue but how well it works. The right thumb stick on a 360 controller has a dead zone on it's axis. Meaning when you let it go the 360 is no longer receiving any data from the thumb stick. In contrast to that your mouse does not have a dead zone of any kind. The computer, or xbox, is recieveing a constant stream of input that updates the mouse position a certain numebr of time per second. So what the adapter has to do is filter the signal from the mouse into the xbox. It also has to filter the input from the keyboard because the xbox has a 360 degree range of movement, in most games, with the left thumb stick. Obviously using the w,a,s and d keys on your keyboard does not give you a 360 range of motion unless used in conjunction with the mouse.

To make my short story long, those things basically add up to what we call input lag. There will be a split second delay between the information you are inputing via the mouse and keyboard, and the movement and actions on screen. It has gotten better since the first generation of these came out but they still hacve a long way to go. Personally I can't play with the input lag. If you can adjust to it and be good with it more power to you but I would suggest you use it for Single Player only.

Finally, i have a slightly different config than most people so I'll go ahead and post it, but only the keys that are different.

Lean left or right - I have both disabled. When I'm sniping nothing makes me smile more than when I see somebody lean out from behind a bush, a building, or whatever, and then I pop them right between the eyes. If you are leaning than I know you wont be moving for longer than it will take me to calmly line up my sights and kill you.

Melee - mapped to Mouse 4 and 5 which are the thumb buttons on my mouse. This is a huge advantage and I used a similar config in Halo 3 becasue now i can run in any direction, look in any direction, and melee all at the same time. Instead of only being able to do two of those three at a time because I have to move my left hand to melee.

F1 - F5 are chat buttons so that I don't hit them on accident.

F switches weapons

C to toggles crouching and Alt crouches

F... hmmm... I'm sure I use it for something... I know in RSV it's to change the fire rate... Can't see myself not using it... but I'm gonna have to go into game to check it out... what a shame...

EDIT: I'm a dumbass... The amount of time I spend playing sabotage I should have known... F is my use key (default setup I think).. It's my arm/disarm the bomb key...

I'm off to make some coffee... try and wake my brain up...

I was just going to edit the previous post, but thought this minor matter of keyboard layout would be shared better if we dragged the thead back up for an extra day or two...

I've just bought a new keyboard, the http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/ke.../3071&cl=gb,en (check the image gallery to see the funky shape)

Now some people say this keyboard is no good for gaming, certain keys too far to reach for in mid battle etc... I say they're wrong...

They're just no good for gaming with the default control setup... I've had to remap most of my keys, but I've never been so comfortable playing an FPS before... It's responsive as hell (and I can press more than 3 buttons at once - yay!) my last decent one died after a beer related incident - so I was stuck with the dodgy old spare that happens to be a PS2 connection instead of USB... Standard square shape, flat, boring thing... The new one is amazing... Although as I've said, I've had to make some alterations to controls... It's still so comfortable after 6 hours of play I can see a noticeable difference in my in game performance...

So any way... For all Logitech Wave owners that don't like there keyboard for gaming... TRY this...

(Characters in brackets are old bindings that are still valid)

FWD - Y (W)
BCK - H (S)
LFT - G (A)
RGT - J (D)
Lean LFT - T (Q)
Lean RGT - U (E)
Crouch - M
Prone - Space (Might change this to V, undecided yet)
Jump - Alt Gr (key to right of spacebar, for some reason COD4 recognises it as Ctrl, but it still works)
Sprint/Steady Sniper - C
Melee - Still the thumb button on my mouse/MS4, now also mouse scroll up
Switch weapon - 6 (2)
C4/Clay (Nob tumour's not for me) - 7 (3)
Air support - 8 (4)
Reload - R (I)
Fragnade - Middle mouse/MS3
Special nade - Mouse Scroll down
Use/plant/disarm - K (F)
Scores/Objectives - 5 (Tab)
Nightvision - N (Always been N, now it's easier to reach...)
Team Chat/open chat are currently on F4/F6 respectively, but I think that's changing to P for private/team chat and O for open chat...

It probably took me about 15 minutes to get used to it, but it was worth it... Now I've got joyful hours ahead of me reconfiguring all my other games to work with this setup (or very close to it).

Yikes I remember having a Z-board a couple of years ago... It was pretty good. I never found it very comfortable though, probably because I never found a decent keyset that I liked for it... Ended up selling it for twice what I originally paid (with 3 extra keysets though!)

Thing is I do a lot of typing, so I needed a keyboard that's comfortable as well as functional... I tend to go for some sort of curved board.

I've had the Microshaft Comfort Curve 2000 (brilliant for gaming and typing... My GF's nicked it now though)

The Microshaft Ergonomic 4000 was the dogs danglies... Took a little time to adjust to it (maybe half an hour) and you had to hammer the spacebar for the first couple of weeks till it loosened slighty. A bit like breaking in a good pair of boots. Plus when sat behind the 4000 you feel like somesort of space ship commander lol...

This new one has the comfort of the 4000 without needing to break it in first, and has a rather funky look without being OTT... Now that I've remapped the keys for most of my games using YHGJ, I have to say it is simply the BEST I've ever used... And at a mere fraction of the price of the overly gimmicky Z board...
