Default Someone Help Me Please

I am having problems playing COD4 in sp & mp. My pc either reboots or totally shuts down at various points in the game. I have tried everything that I have read on Activision's site and various other places. And nothing works.

This is my system (just built on July 17, 2008)

Mother Board Model Name : GA-MA790X-DS4(rev. 1.0)
--------------------------
M/B Rev : 1.0
BIOS Ver : f4
Serial No. :
Purchase Dealer :
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
VGA Brand : Nvidia Model : 8800gt
CPU Brand : AMD Model : Windsor Speed : 3.01
Operation System : Win XP SP : 3
Memory Brand : Corsair Type : DDRII
Memory Size : 2GB Speed : 800
Power Supply : 700 W
Realtek Onboard Sound- Version: 5.10.0.5473 - DirectX 9.0c

I am not running a sound card due to the fact that I ran outta cash when building my system & was told that the gaming mobo I put in my system has really good onboard sound. But I am going to be getting a sound card within the next month.

Things I have tried....

Turned sound to Basic
enabled the stereo mix
changed the mssmp3.asi to mssmp3.bak
turned off firewall & virus scanner
uninstalled & reinstalled game
installed each patch one at a time & made sure the game changed to the newer version
made sure all other programs where turned off b4 running the game

I have done everything I have seen online to do to fix the problem. And nothing works. Is there anything else I can try?? I am at a lose on what else to do. Please help me!!!

may want to test your power supply or try a different one in if you have it. ps could be going bad, having irregular power flow to the system, causing a shutdown or restart.

just an idea

Already had the ps checked. And it is fine. I would say it was the ps, if it happened while doing other things too. But the only time it does this is while I am playing COD4. Thanks tho.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks....I'm gonna read that some more and see if there is something listed there that I have not tried.

But something weird happened the other day....I played COD4 for almost 4 hours, without it making my pc reboot or totally shutdown. Then later that evening (about 3 hours later), my hubby was playing COD4 and it started rebooting & totally shutting down. I'm wondering if the problem we are experiencing could be due to the new maps for the game?? Because it is only certain maps that makes our pc do this. Or is it some other thing very simple that we are over looking???

What graphics drivers are you using?

You can download the latest nvidia forceware from download from Guru3D.com (Yes you can get them from nvidia too, but guru3d are a lot faster for me).

Make sure you uninstall the old forceware first.

It's worth a shot to make sure you have the current drivers for your video card. Also take a look at the video card settings and the settings ingame. If I were you I would still try switching out the ps. You could check the windows event log. Try a free memory tester like Memtest 86+. Also run chkdsk and defrag.

Do you two play under the same account or different ones? I don't know why that would make a difference though...if it were a problem with the game and not your computer it should crash to desktop not reboot the system. That sounds more like a hardware or heat problem. You have been watching fan speeds and gpu/cpu temps?

The rebooting is adding stress to your system which could cause other things to go out, like the motherboard so keep trying.

We updated everything we possibly could....updated mobo, bios, sound drivers, video drivers....and that didn't help. We checked the ingame settings and video card settings, changed a few and it didn't help. Why should I switch out the ps, when I took it to a local computer store and had it checked, and it was fine. We checked the windows event log, and there is nothing there. For some reason, windows is not recording the error. Did a defrag. But not a chkdsk...what's that?

We each have our own account. It's not a heat problem. Because we have been keeping an eye on that and our system is running cool. I have noticed that this problem only happens with the new maps on COD4. For the past couple days, I have been going to the same server, that stays on one map, and my system didn't reboot or shutdown once. But when me or my husband go to a server where the map changes after each round, when it gets to certain maps, it reboots or shutsdown. One map I can think of that causes this to happen everytime we try to play it is Creek. There are a couple others, but I can think of them right now.

I asked the local computer store if it would cause any other problems with our system and they told me no. Not unless there are other programs running while we are playing COD4. So that is not true???

Also I don't think it is a problem with my pc. Because the only time it reboots or shutsdown on us like that is while we are playing COD4. We also play AA and it works fine. So, it has to be some simple setting that we are over looking that is causing it to do this while playing COD4.

What temperature is your CPU running at?

Download Everest, cpuz or similar and check it out.

It may just be a case of opening up your computer and cleaning the heatsink. When the heatsink gets full of crap your CPU will overheat (especially under the high load some games will cause). When the CPU overheats the system will shutdown to avoid damaging any of your components.

The system I am running was just built on July 17th, 2008. Therefore the heatsink doesn't need to be cleaned. It is not a heat issue that is causing my problem. The temps are fine, we have checked them. Plus, COD4 is not the only demanding game we play. We also play AA (America's Army for those that don't what AA stands for). It too is a very demanding game. And we have no problems running it.

The past day or two, we have been getting an error message...."iwmp3.exe has stopped working" what does that mean? and how can I fix it? I have searched the net and found ways to fix it if you are running Vista OS, but not XP home.
