I recommend you a E8400 or E8200. They're relatively cheap and can be overclocked quite high even with the stock cooler (I think to about 3.4 GHz).

Usually, games that use shaders very much (like Crysis) are GPU-heavy, and strategy games (like Supreme Commander (up to 8 players, 1000 units each)) are CPU-heavy.

U are correct Jackolantern, It was 3Dmark3 not 6 I ran.

sorry, my bad tote.... didnt register that people actually still use that old thing

another suggestion is the E6850 Core 2 Duo CPU, its quite fast, can be overclocked heaps (highest FSB WRs are on 6850's) ive got mine at 3.5 with stock cooling (crappy intel fan) and no voltage increase. HUGE vdroop though... grrrr
